Wintry Decor On My Pine Table for Blahuary

If you are anything like me, January can be Blahuary.  The holidays are over and the festive decorations are pack away.  The weather outside isn't the cheeriest.   In many places, it's downright cold and miserable.  But, ya can't give in.  Ya gotta get up and take the best part of this month and embrace it.   You gotta jazz things up a bit!

My sister and I started an tradition of thinking ahead for January.  I try to give her a Christmas gift that is home decor related, but is suited for after the holidays.  I gave her this neat silver and white throw pillow from Pier One.  She put it on her bed.  We both try to make an effort to pick up a little something new just so we have a few fresh accents to bring out and spruce things up a bit.  It keeps the winter blues away.

This year my friend Danielle, whom I like to call Dani, gave me this snowy owl.  She knows how much I love owls and of course I loved it!  It hung near a lamp in my living room for most of the holidays, but I don't consider it a "holiday exclusive" item.  I knew I had bigger and better plans for him.  So when the holidays ended, I got to work.  Dani's gift has a second life to live.

You might remember my blog post about the Homemade Mercury Glass Ornaments.  If you miss it and want to see how I created them using mirror paint, click HERE.  I place the completed balls into a primitive dough bowl that I have with a few other natural elements like pine cones and fresh holiday greens.

White & Siver Sphere Mix

Now that the holidays are over, I removed the greens and added a few little spheres from a White and Silver Sphere Mix I bought after Christmas from Pier One for a song.  I placed my little Snowy Owl into the mix.

I love the little, crinkled wire balls.

I wanted to add a simple white table runner, but since we are 'recovering' from the holiday spending spree, I decided to make do with what I already had.  Remember the blog post from my 25 Days Series showing how to make Festive, Funky Doily Christmas Trees?  Well, if you recall, I bought a huge supply of assorted doilies from a yard sale for about 8 bucks.  Having plenty leftover from the project,  I got them out and fashioned a 'table runner' of sorts using varying sizes of doilies to create it.

I took bright white candles and placed them on two Dollar Store candle stick holders that I sprayed down with leftover Valspars Metallic Silver Spray Paint from the Metallic Ornament Wreath that got so much attention last month.
Ugly, with a capital U.
Ooh la la!

Simple, clean and quick.  I have something fresh for my Pine Table without spending a dime.

Is this the greatest table scape I have ever created? Absolutely not.  But I don't believe that every single thing I do has to be over the top and neither should you.  After all, we are all recovering from the holidays.

Do you have a few little 'somethings' leftover from the holidays that could be used to create wintry jazzy pizazz on your table, mantel or sideboard? You don't have to completely leave behind the sparkle and glamour of the holidays!  You certainly don't want to leave it all bare and blah either.  After all, there is no reason to have a Blahuary when you can have Jazzuary!  So much more fun that way...

The Homeless Finch Takes 2012! Goals...Because I Have To Follow Suit!

Do I really have to share my goals for this year?!  It seems that everyone else is writing their goals for this year and publishing them for the world to see!!  Well, I am not going to do that I guess I have to follow suit, right?!

Fresh, after holiday decor in the studio.

The Homeless Finch Starts to Build a Nest

Well, my goals are primarily based on what I have learned since March of last year.  What is it that is working on my blog?  What isn't working as well?   I am trying to build on my experiences and develop The Homeless Finch into something that is a reflection of myself, but also a place where you, the reader, can come and find ideas, inspiration and instruction.  Yes...instruction.  It seems that last months' 25 Days of Christmas and Holiday Series, filled with How To Tutorials was something that you guys really enjoyed.  I plan on expanding that idea this year.

Inspirational Projects: From My Nest to Yours

You won't be seeing the 25 Days of President's Day Weekend, but you might get a hefty dose of seasonally related projects. Valentines Day and Easter will be here before you know it!  I already have a huge list of projects compiled and have a few in the 'testing' stages as I type this post.  I'm excited to put these inspirations together for you!  There are lot of thrifty ideas, upcycling projects and fun, craftiness planned ahead.

Furniture Fix Ups: One Twig at a Time

Of course, I also have a few furniture renovations in the hopper.  I have had my hands on this cabinet for over 6 months and have been chomping at the bit to get going with it.  I have big plans to take this cabinet far beyond where it sits today!
Before
I also want to try my hand at hand painting fabric on a chair this year and that project is out in my work area for preparations.   I am brainstorming a few motifs for the back of this chair. Any ideas or suggestions? A pineapple?  A graphic of some sort?  What do you think?

Feathering the Nest: Improving My Blog Design

Another goal is to master a few more technical skills as they related to my blog design.  I am happy with the look of my button and my header, although I don't think my button is working based on the fact that I don't see it posted on any of my friends favorite blog lists. Or maybe they just don't want to promote me. (just kidding guys) I need to finally make that darn button work! I also need to figure out why it looks blurry to the left!!  Sheesh! I also want to master the ability to make that darn top menu bar look great and control other aspects of the design as well.   This part is the most taxing for me.  I'm an artist and designer, not a computer genius!

Adding New Skills: Tools to Build a Better Nest

Silhouette Cameo 12"x10" Die Cutting MachineFor Christmas, I got a new Silhouette Cameo and I want to learn how to use it.  Might need to take a few online courses to get it to do what I want.  Last year I bought Photo Shop and never learned how to use it!!  I want to look into taking a few classes.  If I learn anything worthy, I will definitely share.

Welcome back to my faithful followers.  Hope you enjoyed your holiday break.  Last month brought many new readers to The Homeless Finch. I want to Welcome you as well!  I hope you are glad you came along for the ride!  We have lots to do.  So let's get crackin'...

My TOP 10 New Blogging Friends of 2011: An Unanticipated Fringe Benefit Of Blogging

My Top Ten Blogging Friend Finds (no particular order)

Blooming in my backyard right now!

When I started The Homeless Finch back in March, I had no idea what amazing people I would meet along the way in blog land.  I just knew I wanted to share myself, my work and my ideas.  The friendships? Well, what a nice surprise.  Like a the new hybiscus bloom today in my backyard...

Many of you are nice enough to leave the occasional comment and I really appreciate it when you do.  Comments fuel my energy.  But, the following people have really made a significant difference in my blogging life. I truly appreciate their support! When I don't hear from them, I wonder how they are.  When I hear from them, it's like a phone call from a friend just checking in.  Thanks guys!

1. Cassie at Primitive and Proper: A friend with whom I really connect and laugh. A real friendship that I have found on the blogs and cherish.

2.  Deneen at dreamingincolor.  My first blogging friend that I spoke on the phone to.  Yep...it went beyond the virtual world.  We are both going to the Haven conference in June 2012.

3.  Vickie at Ranger 911 - A new friend through blogging.  I like her work, she likes mine.  I appreciate her support.  It keeps me going...  Her sock monkeys make me laugh too!

4.  Grammy Pat of Grammy Goodwill:  The funniest gal I know.  She gets down on her ability to craft, but she a great gal with a huge heart and a busy life!  It's what she SAYS on her blog posts that make my day.  But here is a little image of a pen made with tape in Hokie colors. Her favorite team.

5.  Deb Owen of Twice Nice: She is always there, reading my posts and giving me encouragement.  I feel the same about her.  Her refinishing work is amazing.

6.  Rosemary of Villabarnes:  The "Gesso Queen" whom I have come to enjoy the encouragement we give each other.  She has a hubby that brings home some of the most amazing finds.

7.  Marian of Miss Mustard Seed whom I owe a huge amount of gratitude toward for encouraging me to start this blog last March.

Pillow on chair by Ann at
Sutton Place Interiors.  Another nice lady.

8.  Korrie of Red Hen Home...a sweet gal who has a ton of kids and  just doesn't blog and post about the most amazing projects, she is real and honest and amazing at communicating.  I don't know how she does it all.

9.  Susan at Homeroad:  Inspiration Everywhere! This gal continually rocks my world with her amazing transformations.  I never miss a post!  She is an amazing trash to treasure maven!

10.  The Home Team:  Dani, Sue, Michele C, Ted A., Ken E., Karla W., Jill S. and my sister Lisa:  My friends in my 'real' life who have been so supportive over the last year. Oh! and my hubby Gerry... These are the people who motivate me to do this stuff.  Disappointing them is just not an option.   After all.....I have to literally face them!!!

Thanks to all the rest of you!!!  I hesitated to make and publish this list because I didn't want people to feel left out.  But in the end, I had to give sincere kudos to the people who have really stood by my side. Who have gone beyond the norm to make my day.  I TRULY appreciate each and everyone one of you from the bottom of my heart.

Happy New Year!

It's been an amazing run!
Can't wait to see what 2012 has in store!
